Whiteburn Mines
Though the forest industry was in full swing in the area from the mid-1800s onward, it was the discovery of gold that put Whiteburn Mines, NS, and nearby communities on the map. The Whiteburn gold rush, which began in 1885, led to the construction of three mines that continued to operate until 1905, leading to the building of a railway line to Bridgewater and an economic boom for farmers and the lumber industry in the region.
Today, the 1,000+ people who inhabited the Whiteburn gold camp are a distant memory, but the families who established farming operations in the area continue to thrive on the rich land. Only those interested in exploring Nova Scotia’s history or those drawn to Kejimkujik National Park or Lake Rossignol Wilderness Area are apt to drive or hike through the area.
