Waterloo
Named for the site of Napoleon’s defeat by Wellington, Waterloo, NS, is far removed from any great historical event. Instead, settlers to the area in the mid-1800s came to the area with a land grant for between 50 and 150 acres, sharing the land with the Mi'kmaq people, who continued to catch otter, mink, and other fur-bearing animals.
The dominant physical features of the community are cleared drumlins where most of the cultivation takes place, wetlands, and three lakes: Frederick Lake, Matthew Lake, and Long Lake, which draw some tourism. Since the mid-20th century, wild blueberries and balsam fir Christmas trees have been grown in various parts of the community.
