Wallace
Originally called Remsheg (“the place between”) by the Mi'kmaq, Wallace, NS, was home to Acadians who were burned out during the Bay of Fundy Campaign and then expelled from the area. The Scottish immigrants who settled the area following the Acadian expulsion renamed the town and just about everything nearby in honour of Scottish folk hero William Wallace and Nova Scotia’s first colonial treasurer, Michael Wallace.
In the past, Wallace was best known for the sandstone from its quarries, which has a marked olive hue and can be found in many buildings around the Maritimes and eastern Canada. In addition to being an important commercial centre in the region, Wallace provides its residents with excellent recreation complex including a tennis court, basketball court, baseball field and outdoor ice rink.
