Upper Ohio

Upper Ohio, NS, is about as rural as you can get in the province of Nova Scotia. Established to serve the lumber camps of the mid-1800s, our community provided labour, tools, equipment, and sawmilling for Nova Scotia’s booming forestry industry well into the early 20th century.

Mostly dedicated to farming, Upper Ohio still cuts some trees for Christmas trees throughout eastern Canada and the US. Back Lake, Philip Lake, and Jones Lake are geographical features that attract many to our area, but if you visit or relocate to the area, you’ll quickly discover that ours is the only community in the province that is not connected to the power grid.
