Toney River
Originally known as Booktowtāgun (“the place where flint stone is found”) by the Mi’kmaq, Toney River, NS, got its current name comes from Captain Toney, who was sheltered as a member of the Mi’kmaq tribe so he might avoid the Acadian expulsion. Fishing, farming, and lumbering were carried on as the main industries dating back to the early 1800s.
Fishing and farming continue to be the primary occupations of the residents of Toney River, while nearby, MacKinnon’s Cove and Toney River Beach are a couple of the natural attractions that draw hikers, fishermen, and hunters to the area.
