Tatamagouche, NS
Derived from the native Mi'kmaq term Takǔmegoochk, translated as "Meeting of the waters," the village of Tatamagouche is located on Tatamagouche Bay near the mouth of the French and Waugh Rivers. French Acadians, who settled the area in the early 18th century, established a transshipment point for goods bound for Fortress of Louisbourg, which led to the burning of the village and the expulsion of the Acadians because of their active participation in supplying the French resistance.
The abundance of lumber in the area and its location on the Northumberland Strait made Tatamagouche a prime location for building schooner, brig, brigantine, barque, and clipper ships, and seagoing in yachts thanks to the Barrachois Harbour Yacht Club at Sunrise Shore Marina. The German influence in our community is also strongly represented by hosting the second largest Oktoberfest in Canada.
