Stellarton
Adjacent to New Glasgow, Stellarton, NS, was known as Coal Mines Station and Albion Mines in its early days but later received its name from a specific type of torbanite, which came to be known as "stellarite,” that was abundant in the region. Our community was built around the discovery of the Foord coal seam (the name of the main street of Stellarton), which was part of the greater Stellarton Basin/Pictou Coalfield discovered in the 1790s.
The Stellarton Surface Coal Mine continues to operate under the management of Pioneer Coal today, and Stellarton is the corporate headquarters for the Sobeys grocery store chain and its subsidiaries. Additional attractions in our community include the Nova Scotia Museum of Industry and the Stellarton Memorial Rink, built to honour the memory of Canadians who died in World War I and World War II.
