Springhill came into existence thanks to coal mining, which led to incorporation as a town in 1889. Though among the deepest mines in the world, they were filled with water in 2015 and provide geothermal heating for Springhill's industrial park.
Recreational opportunities and opportunities to interact with nature are abundant in Springhill with a leg of “The Great Trail” or TransCanada Trail System nearby. The Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre in Springhill is testimony of our community’s love of hockey, with an NHL sized ice surface and seating capacity of 800, as well as additional recreation-related facilities, and a fitness trail.
