Springfield
Located about halfway between Middleton and Bridgewater, Springfield, NS, was an important asset in the forestry industry in the mid-1800s. The largest sawmill in Nova Scotia, located in nearby Hastings, provided lumber for railway lines and housing all over Nova Scotia from 1902 until 1920.
A fire in 1928 destroyed all the mill buildings and 35 of the remaining 55 houses in Springfield, but the community continued, engaged in woodlot farming and providing Christmas trees to other eastern Canadian provinces and the United States. Tourism is another primary industry in Springfield thanks to Lake Pleasant and Springfield Lake, popular cottage and camping areas that offer trout and salmon fishing, boating, swimming, and year-round hiking.
