South Maitland
Located near the mouth of the Five Mile River where it empties into the Shubenacadie River, South Maitland, NS, was an important stop on the Shubenacadie Canal system and the site of several 19th-century shipyards. In 1890 the barque Calburga, the last large square-rigger to sail under a Canadian flag, was built in our community.
South Maitland is best known for the historic bridge built over the Shubenacadie River, which was built over challenging tidal waters. Though demolished in the 1990s, a surviving abutment was retrofitted in 2006 by the Fundy Tidal Interpretive Centre at South Maitland as an interpretive lookoff and walking trail that showcases the massive tides of the Shubenacadie River.
