Somerset
Located near Berwick, a crossing place between the Cornwallis and the Annapolis Rivers, Somerset, NS, grew out of the economic impact of building a road between the two rivers, which attracted settlement. The Windsor and Annapolis Railway in 1869 transformed the area into an important regional commercial centre from which agricultural produce from Somerset could be transported throughout the region.
Somerset had a major role in producing the famous Taunton Black cider apples until the European markets for them declined after World War II, transitioning to a more diverse agricultural economy. The rural atmosphere of our town makes it a great place to relax, hike, bike, snowshoe, and take advantage of the abundance of natural beauty that surrounds us.
