Shubenacadie, NS
Originally, the Sipekne'katik region from which the name Shubenacadie is derived, was a large stretch of territory that covered central Nova Scotia. Three wars had an enormous impact on the shaping of the region, which only found peace in the late 18th century, in spite of the efforts of Father Louis-Pierre Thury and Abbé Jean-Louis Le Loutre who attempted to establish a mission.
The tidal bore that occurs in connection with the Minas Basin produces the world’s highest tides and visitors to the area take advantage of the phenomenon to hire boats and guides to travel the tidal bore up the Shubenacadie River during the summer months. The Shubenacadie Wildlife Park is another opportunity for residents and visitors to interact with nature in our rural community.
