Pictou, NS
Pictou was the location of an annual Mi'kmaq summer coastal community prior to European settlement, which began with the Acadian French early on, but later became the main receiving point for many Scottish immigrants moving to a new home following the Highland Clearances of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Shipbuilding, shipping, and railroading became major industrial assets to the region with shipbuilding continuing into the World War II era.
Shipbuilding continues in Pictou in the 21st century, the primary products being fishing trawlers and ferries, while cargo activity in the port continues to thrive thanks to the nearby Scott Maritimes pulp mill and the abandonment of the CN Rail line in the late 1980s. Visitors are attracted to our area because of the waterfront along with the Hector Heritage Quay, the Northumberland Fisheries Museum, Lobster Hatchery, and Lighthouse Museum as well as Lobster Carnival, an annual event featuring a midway, concerts, a pageant, a car show, fireworks, and lobster dinners celebrated in early July since 1934.
