North River
Settled in the 1760s as part of what was then Onslow Township, North River, NS, was among the many townships set up by the British government in Halifax to encourage Planters from New England to come to Nova Scotia after the Acadian expulsion. The primary occupation of early residents of the area was farming.
Due to our community’s close proximity to Truro, North River residents are regular participants in the area’s sporting events, including hockey at Deuvilles Rink, Rath Eastlink Community Centre, and the Colchester Legion Stadium; Canadian football and baseball at the Truro Amateur Athletic Club (TAAC) grounds; harness racing at Truro Raceway; the World Indoor Sevens Rugby Championships, which are hosted in Truro; and lacrosse, played at the Colchester Legion Stadium in the summer months.
