New Ross, NS
New Ross was settled in 1816 by a disbanding group of 172 British soldiers of Irish, English, and German heritage from the Nova Scotia Fencibles as Sherbrooke, later named after Captain William Ross. The settlers received rations, tools, and seeds in order to start farmsteads, though the rations were discontinued within the first few years and only 68 families remained in the region with farming, barrel making, lumber, gristmills, and other mills becoming their primary means of provision.
The community continues to serve as a commercial hub for farming and lumber industries. The peaceful, rural atmosphere of New Ross continues to provide a quiet place to raise a family with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the bounty of surrounding nature through hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, and watersports on nearby Lawson, Harris, and Ramsay Lakes.
