New Germany
Though originally home to the Mi'kmaq First Nation, the first European settlers to New Germany, NS, came as early as 1803, soon followed by foreign Protestants who arrived in Lunenburg in the 18th century. Sawmills and pulp mills were the primary industrial activities in the early days of our community, though farming began to take on greater importance throughout the years.
Today, the New Germany economy hinges on natural resources like farming, blueberries, maple syrup, forestry, and providing Christmas trees all over North America. As the main service centre connecting Bridgewater and Middleton via Highway 10, the New Germany Waterdrome serves as a regional airport in the area.
