Middleton
A popular shad fishing spot for Mi'kmaq families where the Annapolis River and the Nictaux River meet, Middleton, NS, was settled by Acadians who used these waterways to reach Port-Royal and for farming. After the Acadian expulsion in the late 1750s, the region was resettled by New England Planters and Loyalists.
The Torbrook Iron Mines and a second railway line in 1889 sparked a decade of rapid growth and development for Middleton, which had numerous industries supporting and connected to the agricultural and manufacturing industries. Though agriculture continues to be a common economic activity in the area, the greater economic impact comes from its proximity to CFB Greenwood in nearby Kings County.
