Martock
Colonel John Butler named his estate after his birthplace in Martock, Somerset, England when he came back from the Colonies and was rewarded with the land and slaves by George III. The community was later named Martcock, NS, after the Georgian-style mansion built circa 1790 and originally boasted more than 4,000 acres of land.
Primarily a farming community today, Martock is best known for Ski Martock, the only ski resort in southwestern Nova Scotia, built in the hills that form the Avon River valley. In addition to skiing, local recreation includes hiking at Ettinger Falls and golf at nearby Rosevale Golf Course.
