Liverpool, NS
An ancient seasonal camp of Nova Scotia's native Mi'kmaq, Liverpool was known as Ogomkigeak meaning "dry sandy place", and Ogukegeok, meaning "place of departure" before Captain Rossignol, an early 17th-century founder of New France in North America, used the harbour, which bore his name for a period of time, for trading. New England Planters, after the Acadian Expulsion, used the location as a fishing port, renaming it after Liverpool in England, which also lies along its own Mersey River.
After playing a significant role as a British port during the American Revolution and War of 1812, Liverpool was famous for rum-running during Prohibition, and as a shipping port for the Mersey Pulp and Paper Mill. After the closure of the paper mill in 2012, things are a bit quieter in Liverpool where tourism related to our position on Nova Scotia’s Atlantic South Shore.
