Kempt

Kempt, NS, got its name from General Sir James Kempt, who served as Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia from 1820 to 1828. Like Maitland Bridge (named for Sir Peregrine Maitland, who succeeded Kempt) to the northwest and Harmony Mills to the southeast, lumber was the primary reason for Kempt’s establishment.

After much of the timber was cleared from the area around Kempt, farming became the primary occupation of most of the community’s residents, but its proximity to Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site, known as “Keji” by locals, has led to the development of the tourist industry.
