Indian Gardens
The history of Indian Gardens, NS, began to surface in the 1920s when the Mersey Paper Company built a hydroelectric dam on Lake Rossignol to power its newest mill. Pottery and artifacts related to cultivating crops of the Mi'kmaq people began to appear, though Indigenous peoples had not occupied the land since well before 1800.
Indian Gardens has continued to be a farming community since Abraham Hebb began cultivating the land in the area in 1856. Today, the oldest cranberry bog in Canada continues to produce cranberries and a farm market provides customers throughout the region an opportunity to purchase fresh produce.
