Hantsport

Hantsport, NS, was known as Kakagwek, meaning “place where meat is sliced and dried” to the Miꞌkmaq, some of who still reside in the area as part of the Glooscap First Nation, or Pesikitk. The British soldier Edward Barker purchased the Hantsport lots in 1789, moved his family to Hantsport, and established the settlement initially called “Halfway River," named for being the point halfway between Grand-Pré and Windsor.

Shipbuilding ceased as a major industry by the beginning of the 20th century. The transport of gypsum, mined near Windsor, and the Minas Basin Pulp and Power pulp mill were responsible for most of the growth in Hantsport into the 21st century, when both operations were shut down. Today’s Hantsport is a quiet residential community with a healthy atmosphere for raising a family or for retirement.
