Greenfield
Known as Ponhook by the Mi'kmaq Nation, Greenfield, NS, was a known fishing and hunting ground until European settlement and the establishment of a town under its new name in 1850. Along with a Jesuit chapel for converting Indigenous peoples, Greenfield had a bootlegging operation and a single sawmill prior to 1850.
Forestry remains a primary economic activity in Greenfield along with tourism, which offers camping, drag racing sponsored by the Greenfield Dragway Nova Scotia Drag Racing Association, fishing, and hunting. Cottages and summer homes on Ponhook Lake abound, contributing significantly to the summer population of our community, which provides several planked salmon suppers for the community in July and September.
