Gilberts Cove
After receiving a land grant of 600 acres from King George III, Colonel Thomas Gilbert settled in the area that was later called Gilbert’s Cove, NS. It is best known for being home to the “Greatest Little Lighthouse in Canada,” which played a significant role during the Second World War by preventing German U-boats from tracking targets.
Located on Gilbert's Point, along the shoreline of St. Mary's Bay, the Gilbert's Cove Lighthouse is a two-story square building with wood shingles, a hipped roof, a centrally mounted lantern, and a large lean-to on one side. It is one of only two known lighthouses of this style and is open daily from mid-June to late September for visitors and residents to enjoy.
