Digby, NS

Named after Admiral Robert Digby, our community is situated on the western shore of the Annapolis Basin near the entrance to the Digby Gut, which connects the basin to the Bay of Fundy. Originally called Conway, the area was formally settled and surveyed as a town by United Empire Loyalists under the leadership of Sir Robert Digby and became an important regional transportation centre in the 1890s with a sizable fleet of ships that connected to the Dominion Atlantic Railway and a series of steamships.

Waterborne transportation is still an essential part of modern Digby, which harbours a scallop fishing fleet and utilizes The MV Fundy Rose ferry as a means of connecting to Saint John, New Brunswick, across the Bay of Fundy. More than 20 motels, inns, and bed and breakfast operations are based in Digby, making tourism an important employer, bringing in fishing and tourism during the Scallop Days Festival, held the first week of August, and the Wharf Rat Rally has drawn nearly 50,000 bikers to the area since it began in 2004.
