In 1761, New England Planters were granted lands on former Acadian settlements in the Chester area, called Shoreham at that time. Chester was an important site for coastal commerce that included lumbering, shipbuilding, shipping, and fishing in the 1800s.
Today, our community is less known for its coastal commerce and better known for kayaking, sailing, and Chester Race Week, where keelboats from all over the eastern coast of North America compete during the second week of August on Mahone Bay. Visitors and residents alike also take advantage of a provincial ferry with a schedule of daily trips connecting Chester to Big Tancook Island and Little Tancook Island.
