Canning, NS

After the expulsion of the Acadians, Canning was referred to as Apple Tree Landing, and later Habitant Corner by New England Planters and Dutch immigrants after World War II, but its present name was adopted in honour of British prime minister George Canning who, in 1827, served 118 days in the position. Canning was a major shipbuilding centre as well as a shipping and rail hub for farmers in Kings County at one time as well.

Recreation and site-seeing are major attractions of Canning today, featuring Bigelow Trail, Blomidon Look-off Provincial Park, Bruce Spicer Park, Glooscap Arena (hockey), the Look Off, and Scots Bay Provincial Park. The Canning Lighthouse, built in 1904 to serve the port at Borden's Wharf, is also an attraction for tourists in its new waterfront site on the Habitant River.
