Many of us believe that hearing loss exclusively affects the older generations – 70-90 years old is when we see the most hearing struggles. Or so we thought.
If you’re reading this, chances are that you’re in your 60s and you’ve noticed some hearing loss challenges recently.
You’re not alone; millions of people under the age of 70 face hearing loss each day, and aging isn’t the only way to acquire it.
You’re never too young, or too old, to have some form of hearing loss challenge. What matters is how you treat it so you can get back to enjoying your life to the fullest!
How Did I Get Hearing Loss?
Aging is one way to acquire hearing loss through what’s called presbycusis, or how our hearing deteriorates as we get older – but it’s not the only way. Genetic predisposition, medication complications, noise exposure, and accidents can also all lead to hearing loss challenges.
Think about all the busy environments you frequent on a daily, or even weekly, basis: the office, the gym, restaurants with loved ones, even just your living room with the TV on. We encounter a lot of noise each day, which is what makes noise-induced hearing loss so common, especially with younger generations.
(After all, who hasn’t gone to a concert and come home with ringing ears? We’re not immune!)
Thankfully, there are many ways to remedy your hearing loss – professional hearing care, including hearing assessments, ear cleanings, and, where needed, prescription hearing aids, can all help you keep an eye (or an ear) on your hearing.
Of course, nobody’s jumping at the chance to visit the audiologist. Hearing care has long been seen as something shameful, associated with old age. However, that stigma is changing; more and more young people are taking charge of their hearing health, making sure to safeguard their ears as they get older.
If you’ve read this far, you’re already on the right track to listening to your golden years with clear, crisp hearing.
