It’s a valid question to ask: “Am I too young to have a hearing loss?”

Hearing loss and hearing care are often attached to negative connotations surrounding aging and getting older; however, I’m here to tell you that’s not always the case.

My team and I have seen countless young people come in for help with their hearing, from small children to adults as young as fifty. Hearing loss affects far more than just the older generations!

Whether you frequented concerts with loud music, restaurants full of people, construction sites booming with equipment use or simply listening to music with your headphones, our hearing gets damaged in more ways than one – and sometimes, we don’t notice until it’s too late.

How Did I Get a Hearing Loss?

Hearing loss can be caused by several things. Some people are born with a hearing loss due to problems during childbirth, while many people acquire a hearing loss later in life due to injury, infection, noise exposure or age.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is among the most common ways to cause hearing loss. Noise exposure is steadily increasing, and with more and more young people turning up the volume on their personal devices, NIHL is becoming more frequent as a result.

However, we at Provincial Hearing don’t see hearing loss as a negative. Rather, we see it as a sign of a life well lived! No matter what busy environments you frequent, or what music you’re dancing along to, hearing loss is a sign that you’ve had a busy, well-lived life full of fun.

If you’ve read this far, we hope you’ve found the answer to the first question of whether you’re “too young” to get a hearing loss.

The answer: Nobody is too young—or too old—to struggle with a hearing loss.
